Connecting Sales Layer MCP Server to ChatGPT

Modified on Tue, 2 Jun at 12:00 PM

ChatGPT can connect to the Sales Layer MCP Server as a custom connector when your ChatGPT account or workspace supports MCP connectors and developer mode.

This connection allows ChatGPT to use Sales Layer MCP tools to query and analyze your product catalog from a ChatGPT conversation.

i

Note: ChatGPT connector settings may vary depending on your ChatGPT plan, workspace configuration, and organization permissions. If you do not see the options described in this article, ask your ChatGPT workspace administrator to check whether developer mode and custom connectors are enabled.

Before you start

Before connecting the Sales Layer MCP Server to ChatGPT, make sure you have:

  • Access to ChatGPT with permission to create custom connectors.
  • Developer mode enabled in ChatGPT.
  • A Sales Layer account with access to the catalog you want to use.
  • Your Sales Layer Catalog Token.

At the moment, the Catalog Token is not obtained from an API/Tokens section inside the Sales Layer PIM. To get it, contact Sales Layer Support or your Sales Layer account representative.

!

Warning: Do not paste the Catalog Token as a bearer token or API key in ChatGPT. The Catalog Token is entered in the Sales Layer authorization screen during the connection flow.

Enable developer mode in ChatGPT

To create a custom connector, developer mode must be enabled in ChatGPT.

  1. Open ChatGPT.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Apps & Connectors.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and open Advanced settings.
  5. Enable Developer mode.

If developer mode is not available, your organization may not allow it. Contact your ChatGPT workspace administrator.

Create the Sales Layer connector

Once developer mode is enabled, you can create a connector for the Sales Layer MCP Server.

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings.
  2. Go to Connectors.
  3. Click Create.
  4. Enter the connector metadata shown below.
  5. Click Create.

FieldValue
Connector nameSales Layer MCP
DescriptionUse Sales Layer MCP tools to query and analyze product catalog data from Sales Layer PIM.
Connector URLhttps://mcp.saleslayer.com/mcp

After you click Create, ChatGPT checks whether the MCP server is reachable and reads the tools advertised by the server.

Authorize the Sales Layer connection

When ChatGPT connects to the Sales Layer MCP Server, it may open the Sales Layer authorization flow. This is where you enter your Sales Layer Catalog Token.

  1. When the Sales Layer authorization screen opens, review the connection details.
  2. Select the access profile if the screen asks you to choose one. Use Read only unless ChatGPT needs to update catalog data.
  3. Enter your Sales Layer Catalog Token.
  4. Validate the token and continue.
  5. After validation, return to ChatGPT to complete the connection.

Use the connector in a ChatGPT conversation

Once the connector is created, you can use it in a new ChatGPT conversation.

  1. Open a new chat in ChatGPT.
  2. Click the + button near the message composer.
  3. Click More.
  4. Choose the Sales Layer MCP connector from the list of available tools.
  5. Ask a question related to your Sales Layer catalog.

For example, you can ask:

What Sales Layer tools are available?

Or:

Show me a summary of my product catalog.

Tool calls and confirmations

When ChatGPT uses the Sales Layer MCP Server, it may show tool-call information in the conversation. This helps you review which tool is being used and what data is being requested.

If the connection includes tools that can modify data, ChatGPT may ask you to confirm write actions before running them. Review these confirmations carefully before approving them.

Tip: Start with a read-only connection if your goal is to analyze or search catalog data. Use full access only when ChatGPT is expected to create or update information in Sales Layer.

Refresh the connector metadata

If the Sales Layer MCP Server tools or descriptions change, refresh the connector metadata in ChatGPT.

  1. Open Settings in ChatGPT.
  2. Go to Connectors.
  3. Open the Sales Layer MCP connector.
  4. Click Refresh.
  5. Check that the tool list is updated.

Troubleshooting

Developer mode is not availableYour organization may not allow developer mode, or your ChatGPT environment may not expose custom connectors.Ask your ChatGPT workspace administrator to check Apps & Connectors permissions.
The Create button is not visibleDeveloper mode may not be enabled.Enable developer mode in Settings > Apps & Connectors > Advanced settings.
ChatGPT cannot create the connectorThe connector URL may be incorrect or the MCP server could not be reached.Check that the Connector URL is https://mcp.saleslayer.com/mcp and try again.
Authorization does not completeThe browser popup or redirect may be blocked, or the Catalog Token may be invalid.Allow popups, retry the connection, and confirm that your Catalog Token is valid.
No Sales Layer tools appearThe connector metadata may not have loaded correctly.Open the connector settings and use Refresh. If the issue continues, delete and recreate the connector.
Write actions ask for confirmationChatGPT is asking you to approve an action that may modify data.Review the action carefully before approving it. Use read-only access if you do not want ChatGPT to modify Sales Layer data.

Best practices

Use a clear connector name and description. ChatGPT uses the connector description to understand when the Sales Layer MCP tools are relevant.

Start with a read-only connection for search, catalog analysis, enrichment review, data quality checks, and reporting.

Keep your Sales Layer Catalog Token secure. Enter it only in the Sales Layer authorization screen and never share it in screenshots, documents, or support tickets.

Refresh the connector metadata after changes to the MCP Server tools or descriptions. Then test the connector in a new ChatGPT conversation before using it for real catalog work.
